Guest Advocate

May - August 2019 • Coralville, IA

What I liked

I enjoyed the people I got to meet from the experience and the opportunity to learn what it meant to work for a larger company

What I wish was different

Communication was very hard because there were so many advisors. Also, at the time of my employment, the computer system for their workers were down. It was very hard to communicate when I needed time off or the dates I could work.

Advice

If you need a summer job and a little more bang for your buck, it is worth it. You just have to be ready to be busy. Also, Iowa City traffic was a struggle for me.

Human Resources Intern

December 2018 • Orem, UT

What I liked

I enjoy working closely with team members to ensure their well-being working at Target, assisting with training team members and working with team leaders to effectively lead their teams. I like being able to assist with interviews, payroll, and scheduling as well as communicating externally with the public.

What I wish was different

I want to be more involved in more Human Resource Manager processes. Day-to-day scheduling, assisting team members, and creating a safe environment for all team members and patrons is wonderful, however, I would like to know more about the technical side of staffing, benchmarks, and labor costs and productivity.

Advice

For an intern: Do not get discouraged with the amount of information you have to learn in a short amount of time. Repeated usage of the knowledge you learn will solidify and you'll be an expert in no time.

Flexible Fulfillment Team Member

July - August 2019 • Bridgewater Township, NJ

What I liked

Having worked in this same position at a Target in East Hanover for roughly a year prior, transferring to the store in Bridgewater was largely seamless. Equipment and rules remained consistent, with me only having to adjust to a new store layout. The department leader, store manager and HR team were consistently approachable and respectful of my needs, and often worked alongside me. They were extremely accepting of any schedule changes I needed to make, while keeping me informed in person of any opportunities for extra hours, and via email of potential benefits I was eligible for (e.g. their 401k plan). As for the work itself, my Flexible Fulfillment position presented a wide range of potential jobs to perform in a single day, with me often alternating between them to meet store deadlines and demands. I might find myself picking items for most of the day to complete online orders, but occasionally completing order pick-ups for guests near the front of the store as they appear, and helping other team members pack the orders I had picked. Even with all of these different jobs at my disposal, understanding and juggling them has been fairly easy since I was first employed at Target in the summer of 2018. The easy-to-use equipment and a very supportive team are big contributors to making the variety of jobs liberating rather than stressful. Altogether, my time working for Target - which I plan to continue - easily surpassed my expectations for an entry-level retail job, with far better pay, hours, team cohesion and work variety than most would probably expect for such a position.

What I wish was different

On occasion, supplies would be scare for my shifts starting before noon, forcing me to borrow them from my coworkers or find work I could do without them; though admittedly, neither of these ever took more than a few minutes to sort out.

Advice

As mentioned prior, my team leaders and store manager would often let me know about opportunities to work more hours. Keep in mind that these requests are completely optional; only the online copy of your schedule is mandatory, barring any sick days or other reasons for absence that you would report to HR. I used to suspect that I would be penalized in some way for not accepting these requests, even though I neither saw that happen to other people nor was I ever pressured to say yes. While having a more flexible schedule would logically offer some extra job security during a layoff, as you would be a more valuable employee, I was never coerced to work longer than I wanted or scheduled to.

Executive Team Leader Intern

July - August 2020 • Foothill Ranch, CA

What I liked

Great team and mentors, everyone was really invested in my success.

What I wish was different

I wish I had been able to get the full 10 week experience. It was shortened to 6 weeks due to Covid.

Advice

Everyone gave me the same advice: make the experience yours. In other words, if I wanted to have a good experience and learn something, I needed to ask questions and volunteer for things and put myself out there.

Style Consultant

April 2020 • Chandler, AZ

What I liked

I loved everyone on my team! They were all incredibly kind, hardworking, and willing to lend a hand when needed.

What I wish was different

I wish our staffing situation would have been different. The store was almost always understaffed at the check-lanes and in the style department.

Advice

If you feel like you are having a hard time getting your work done for some reason (lack of staffing or other), say something to your team lead! They will almost always help you get it done.
